Pinterest Pin on 4 days in Budapest

Day 1 - Kossuth Lajos Square, Parliament, Shoes on the Danube, Chain Bridge, St Stephen’s Basilica and New York Cafe’

After your checking-in at the hotel head over to the city center to start exploring. You can start your walk from Kossuthe Lajos Square, right by the beautiful Hungarian Parliament Building. As you are in the area, take a look at the Chocolate Museum and Szamos Cafe for a little coffee and Hungarian dessert break. Head over to the Danube and start walking along the riverbank heading west. A few meters after the parliament you will find the famous ‘shoes on the Danube’ a memorial dedicated to the victim of the holocaust during the Second World War. Continue your walk along the river until you reach the famous Chain Bridge and head over to visit St Stephen’s Basilica before ending the day at the fascinating New York Cafe’, one of the most famous coffee houses in the city.

Day 2 - Parliament Building Tour, Matthias Church, Fisherman’s Bastion, Buda Castle and Gardens, Sunset at the Citadella

Start your day with a one-hour tour of the Parliament building (entry for tours is on the right-hand side of the building if looking at it from the square, full address will be on your tickets or use my google maps link to get there 🙂). Going in on a tour is the only options for visitors, check out the official website for more info and prices here. Hop on a tram and head over to the gorgeous Fisherman's Bastion, my favourite place in the city! It is a truly beautiful building and you will also get some amazing views on the Danube and Parliament from up there (consider returning by night as well, definitely worth it!). Next to the Fisherman’s Bastion, you will also find Matthias Church. When you are done admiring the Bastion, continue towards Buda Castle and the Castle Garden. Conclude your day with a beautiful sunset from the Citadella. One of the highest points of Budapest.

Day 3 - Heroes Square, Vajdahunyad Castle and Gate Tower and Szechenyi Thermal Bath

Start the day at Heroes Square, one of the major squares in Budapest with a memorial dedicated to important Hungarian National leaders. Before starting your day of relaxation, head over to Vajdahunyad Castle and Gate Tower for a quick visit and a little lunch around the area. It’s relaxation time! Spend the afternoon at the Szechenyi Thermal Bath. The baths are known worldwide and since its opening in 1913 they have become an icon of Budapest. Apart from the main internal and external pools, you can also book a nice massage at very cheap prices. Info on tickets and services here. For the evening I would recommend a nice traditional dinner in one of the many restaurants around the city center and a little night walk to see the city by night.

Day 4 - Gellert Hill Cave and Rock Chapel, Liberty Bridge, City Market Hall, State Opera House

After your morning coffee and breakfast, make your way to Gellert Hill Cave to visit the Rock Chapel, a little Chapel carved in the rock of Gellert Hill. When ready, walk down the hill towards Liberty Bridge and cross to the other side of the Danube. You can’t leave Budapest without a visit to the City Market Hall. In there you will find lots of traditional national dishes to try out including the most amazing goulash I have tried during my time in Budapest! If you still have some time left before your return flight, then I would suggest a guided visit of the fascinating Hungarian State Opera House. Make sure to book in advance as there are only three guided tours throughout the day at specific times.
